It is in postal District 2 (Anson, Tanjong Pagar), at the southern end of the Shenton Way office strip. The 30-storey tower was designed by RSP Architects Planners & Engineers. The Council on Tall Buildings lists construction from 1981 to 1985, and the National Library Board records that MAS moved into its own building from 1987.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The tower is a government office rather than a commercial block. Most of it is not open to the public. The exception is the MAS Gallery, which takes up two storeys and uses more than 30 multimedia exhibits to explain what the authority does, from monetary policy to issuing currency.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch3>Interesting facts\u003C\u002Fh3>\u003Cul>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>MAS was set up on 1 January 1971. It took over insurance regulation in 1977 and securities regulation in 1984, around the time this building was going up.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>On 1 October 2002 MAS merged with the Board of Commissioners of Currency, so Singapore's notes and coins have been issued from here since then.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>Shenton Way stands on land reclaimed under the Telok Ayer scheme of the 1930s. The road was opened on 3 August 1951 and named after Sir Shenton Thomas, a former governor.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>The planners' first choice of name was Raffles Way. It was dropped because too many places were already named after Raffles.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\u003Ch3>Nearby\u003C\u002Fh3>\u003Cp>Prince Edward Road MRT on the Circle Line, which opened in July 2026, and Tanjong Pagar MRT on the East-West Line are each about five minutes on foot. Shenton Way MRT on the Thomson-East Coast Line is a little further north. Neighbours include 79 Anson Road, Twenty Anson, the Singapore Conference Hall and Bestway Building, which began as the first Singapore Polytechnic campus.
