Look for evidence rather than diagnosing bites

NEA describes visual inspection and surveillance traps as ways to detect bedbugs. Look at safely accessible bedding seams and furniture, and record what you find. Skin marks alone do not establish the pest. Keep a clear photograph or safely contained specimen for a professional to identify.

Avoid spreading the problem

Keep suspect belongings contained while arranging advice. Do not carry loose infested bedding around common areas or leave untreated furniture for someone else to collect. Follow the pest company's preparation instructions so treatment is not undermined by moving items between rooms.

Ask for professional assessment early

NEA recommends a pest-management company for infestation. Treatment can combine inspection, cleaning, laundering, heat and pesticides, depending on the situation. A single vacuuming session or spray does not establish that the infestation is gone. Do not improvise heating equipment, pesticide mixtures or treatments around electrical outlets.

Keep a useful treatment record

Tell the company when you first noticed signs, recent travel or second-hand items, and which rooms are affected. Ask what preparation, follow-up inspections and repeat visits are included. Tell your landlord if renting and management if common-area coordination may be needed. A report does not establish where the insects originated.

Care for bites and prevent reintroduction

HealthHub notes that bedbugs can occur in clean homes and hitchhike on belongings. Inspect travel items and second-hand furniture before bringing them into sleeping areas. Avoid scratching bites and ask a pharmacist or clinician for suitable relief. Seek medical advice for persistent or worsening symptoms or infection concerns; serious allergic symptoms need urgent medical help. Follow treatment advice rather than substituting an online diagnosis.
