There's a heavy lightning storm. Is my home safe, and what should I avoid?
General guidance for homes in Singapore. In a condo or other strata building, common property is for the management office; in an HDB flat, your Town Council.
Indoors you are safe from strikes; the risks are open areas, water and balconies. Singapore averages 167 thunderstorm days a year, so this is worth knowing cold.
Check first
- Is anyone still outdoors, at the pool or on an open rooftop?
- Is laundry hanging out on poles you might reach for during the storm?
- Any planned outdoor activity? Check myENV before heading out.
What you can try
- Stay inside a building or a car until 30 minutes after the last thunder.
- Keep off the balcony and away from the pool; NEA's advice is to keep clear of water bodies entirely.
- Minimise the use of electrical appliances during the storm, which is NEA's stated indoor precaution.
- Avoid holding metal objects, and bring laundry in before the storm rather than during it.
When to stop and get help
- Someone is struck: call 995; it is safe to touch and help them immediately.
- You are caught outdoors far from shelter: avoid tall trees, sheds and tents, and get to a building or car.
