About 26 Carlisle Road
26 Carlisle Road is a small walk-up apartment building registered under MCST 1168. OneMap lists three addresses at the site, 26, 26A and 26B Carlisle Road, Singapore 219593, and gives no building name. That pattern is typical of a low-rise block with one home per floor. It is in District 8 (Little India and Farrer Park), in the Pek Kio neighbourhood north of Farrer Park rather than in Little India proper. OneMap does not mark the address as part of a conservation area.
Interesting facts
Carlisle Road is named after the city of Carlisle in Cumbria. It belongs to the group of about 22 roads around Cambridge Road and Dorset Road that carry the names of English counties, cities and towns.
Chinese residents knew this neighbourhood as Pek Kio, meaning white bridge.
The Singapore Improvement Trust built several housing estates around here between the 1930s and 1950s. Construction of the Central Expressway in the 1980s later cut through the area and led to the clearance of Norfolk Estate.
