Verdun Road recalls the 1916 Battle of Verdun in France. From 1926 the colonial government named newly opened roads in this district after First World War personalities and battle sites.
The land here was once swamp. It was filled from the 1920s, partly with ash from an incinerator near Syed Alwi Road, before the present street grid was built.
City Square Mall, a short walk away, stands on the site of the former New World Amusement Park.
