The Jalan Besar district was low-lying swamp between the Rochor and Kallang rivers before it was filled and built over. This is a fact about the area, not the building.
The ornate terrace houses on nearby Petain Road, known for their decorative tiles, are protected under conservation.

City Square Mall and Mustafa Centre are the main shopping stops. Berseh Food Centre and the eateries along Jalan Besar and Kitchener Road cover daily meals. Jalan Besar Stadium, opened in 1929, and its public swimming complex are close. Farrer Park Primary School is the nearest primary school.
