Interesting facts
About the street: Marne Road takes its name from the Marne battles of the First World War. In 1928 the municipal authorities named a group of roads here after battles and commanders of that war, among them Somme Road, Verdun Road, Sturdee Road and Beatty Road.
About the area: three of the 1928 names, Mons Road, Jutland Road and Falkland Road, have since vanished from the map as the district was rebuilt.
About the area: the Petain Road terrace houses nearby, 18 homes from the early 1930s covered in glazed tiles, became part of the Jalan Besar conservation area in 1991.
About the area: Jalan Besar Stadium, a few streets south, opened on 26 December 1929 and is today the home of the Football Association of Singapore.
