About Tekka Place

Tekka Place is a retail and serviced-residence development at 2 Serangoon Road, Singapore 218227, at the gateway to Little India in District 8 (Little India / Farrer Park). It was jointly developed by Lum Chang Holdings and LaSalle Investment Management, with Lum Chang Building Contractors as builder. Construction started in mid-2017, the structure topped out on 1 March 2019, and the mall officially opened on 9 March 2020.

The complex has a 10-storey main block and a 7-storey annex with a rooftop deck. Retail takes up about 70,000 square feet across the basement and the first two floors, planned for around 80 shops and eateries. Above the mall is Citadines Rochor Singapore, a 320-unit serviced residence of studios and one-bedroom apartments managed by The Ascott.

Interesting facts

  • The site was once the Kandang Kerbau Market. In 2003 it became Tekka Mall, described as the first and largest modern shopping mall in Little India.

  • Tekka Mall was refurbished and renamed The Verge on 16 July 2008, pitched as an IT, lifestyle and food hub. The Verge closed in July 2017 and its main building was demolished that September. The annex block was kept and reworked into the new scheme.

  • The new name was announced on 13 August 2018. Tekka is the name many Indian Singaporeans use for the Little India area itself.

  • An internal street cuts through the podium to link Serangoon Road with Clive Street, and the facade screens carry lotus-petal motifs that nod to the district's shophouses.

Nearby

Little India MRT (North East and Downtown lines) and Rochor MRT (Downtown Line) are each about 3 to 5 minutes' walk, and Jalan Besar MRT (Downtown Line) is a little further. Tekka Centre, with its large wet market and hawker centre, is directly across Serangoon Road. The Little India conservation area, gazetted on 7 July 1989, begins at the doorstep, with Little India Arcade and Campbell Lane nearby. Sim Lim Square and the Rochor Canal are just to the south.
