Interesting facts

  • Sam Leong Road was called Paya Road until 1928, when the Municipal Commissioners renamed it after Ong Sam Leong (1857 to 1918), a businessman who held the contract to supply labour to the phosphate mines of Christmas Island.

  • His sons opened New World on Jalan Besar on 1 August 1923. It was the first of Singapore's three big amusement parks and ran until 1987. City Square Mall now occupies the site.

  • The old name Paya, Malay for swamp, is a reminder that this side of Jalan Besar was once low, wet ground before it was filled and built over.

  • Jalan Besar, at the end of the street, is lined with conserved shophouses from the early 20th century and falls within a URA conservation area.

Mustafa Centre is around the corner on Syed Alwi Road, and City Square Mall is a few minutes north. Berseh Food Centre and the Jalan Besar coffee shops are close by. Jalan Besar Stadium, the Petain Road terrace houses and the streets of Little India are all within walking distance.
