A condo power outage: stay safe and report clearly
General guidance for Singapore condo residents. Follow current official advice and confirm arrangements for your own building.
Make the immediate area safe
Use a battery-powered torch instead of candles. Stay away from wet switches, exposed wiring, sparks or damaged equipment. A fire or medical emergency takes priority over working out why the lights went off; call 995 from a safe place when emergency help is needed.
Establish the scope without opening equipment
Check whether one appliance, your whole home or nearby homes are affected. Ask the guardhouse about notices or other reports. Several dark units do not prove a national-grid failure. Leave electrical rooms and common switchgear to authorised personnel.
Contact the right team
Tell management the block, unit, start time and what appears affected. Ask where verified updates will be posted. EMA's outage guidance lists the Electricity Service Centre hotline, 1800 778 8888, and advises checking official SP or EMA updates. Avoid forwarding guessed restoration times.
Leave electrical faults to an LEW
EMA requires a Licensed Electrical Worker for electrical-installation work such as wiring alterations and repairs. An RCCB cuts power when it detects leakage; frequent unexplained trips need an LEW check. Do not keep resetting it, remove a board cover or bypass protection to restore power.
While waiting and afterwards
Keep the fridge closed, switch off ordinary appliances where safe and conserve phone battery for essential communication. Keep a torch, charged power bank and written contact list ready. People using powered medical equipment should have an individual backup plan agreed with their clinician and supplier. Report recurring failures or abnormal smells after restoration.
