Know which device you are checking

A home fire alarm device provides early warning by sounding an alarm. SCDF recommends smoke detection for primary home protection and devices with built-in ten-year batteries. Your particular alarm may differ: identify its make and model and obtain the manufacturer's instructions before applying a maintenance routine.

Follow the device's test procedure

Use its designated test control as instructed and keep a record of the result. Tell others at home before a planned test. Do not use smoke, a candle or another flame to test the alarm. If it cannot be reached safely, arrange help rather than standing on furniture. Leave common-area detectors, panels and building-system tests to management.

An unfamiliar beep needs checking

Do not assume every sound means a low battery. Read the manual when it is safe to do so, and contact the supplier if the pattern or fault remains unclear. An alarm sounding with signs of fire takes priority over troubleshooting: leave safely and call 995. Do not delay escape to inspect the device.

Keep the alarm usable

Follow the model's cleaning and replacement instructions. Do not cover the alarm, interfere with wiring or open a sealed battery compartment. Record the printed end-of-life date if present. A long-life battery is not a promise that a damaged or malfunctioning alarm can be ignored.

Arrange a clear handover

For a failed test or persistent fault, send the supplier the model, sound or indicator pattern and a safe photograph. Tenants should notify their landlord; management should clarify equipment connected to the building. Ask who will arrange replacement and how it will be tested. This guide does not assign costs under your tenancy or prescribe a universal maintenance interval.

Find your building's management office

Every building in the estate.sg directory lists its management office's number and address.
