Interesting facts
Beach Road once ran along the actual shoreline. Reclamation began in the 1840s, and the sea is now several blocks away beyond Nicoll Highway and Marina Centre.
Under the 1822 town plan this stretch was set aside for the European community. A row of large seafront houses gave the road its Hokkien nickname, which translates as "twenty houses street".
After the beach disappeared in the 1880s the area fell out of fashion with Europeans, and the Hainanese community settled around Beach Road, Seah Street, Purvis Street and Middle Road.
In 2026 URA began a two-year pilot allowing new hotel, hostel and serviced apartment proposals in the nearby Seah Street, Purvis Street and Liang Seah Street blocks, reversing a long-standing restriction.

Esplanade MRT (Circle Line) is roughly five minutes on foot, and City Hall MRT (East-West and North-South Lines) about eight to ten minutes. Bugis MRT (East-West and Downtown Lines) is a similar distance to the north. Raffles Hotel, South Beach and the Civilian War Memorial are close by. Purvis Street and Seah Street are known for Hainanese chicken rice and old-style coffee shops.
