  • The street is named after Tan Yong Siak, a Teochew merchant and community leader. Most roads in the estate carry the names of Chinese pioneers, among them Koh Eng Hoon, Seah Eu Chin and Khoo Tiong Poh.

  • Tiong Bahru means new cemetery, from Hokkien and Malay. Before the SIT moved in, the site held burial grounds, swamp and more than 2,000 squatters.

  • A 33-hectare improvement scheme for the area was approved in 1926. Ground works were finished by 1931, but flat building only began in 1936.

  • The first block, Block 55, was ready in December 1936 with 28 flats and four shops. By 1941 the estate had 784 flats, 54 tenements and 33 shops for about 6,000 people.
