Interesting facts
The Hainanese arrived in Singapore later than other Chinese dialect groups and, from the 1880s, settled between North Bridge Road and Beach Road. Seah Street became known as Hainan Third Street.
The area was a centre of the Hainanese coffee shop trade. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Seah Street had three Hainanese coffee shops, Purvis Street seven and Middle Road five, according to the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre.
Many of those shops opened after Hainanese owners bought shophouses from departing Japanese businesses during the Great Depression.
In 2026 URA eased a long-standing bar on new hotels, hostels and serviced apartments for commercial and mixed-use buildings on Seah Street and neighbouring streets, as a two-year pilot running to May 2028.

Raffles Hotel lines one side of the street, and Raffles City, South Beach and the National Library are all within a short walk. Purvis Street and Liang Seah Street offer plenty of places to eat.
