Ai Tong School: a century of education and community

Ai Tong School traces its beginnings to 1912, when Pastor Ong Kah Mok and educator Koh Chee Hou established a school for the children of Chinese immigrants. Lessons began in 1913 with 30 pupils in premises at Boon Tat Street. The school later moved to Telok Ayer Street, beginning a history of relocation and growth that eventually brought it to Bright Hill Drive.

The Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan took over the school in 1929. Ai Tong became government-aided in 1957 and joined the Special Assistance Plan in 1989. Its heritage continues to connect the school with Chinese language and culture alongside its wider educational programme.

Ai Tong moved to 100 Bright Hill Drive in July 1992. Subsequent improvements included an extension block, an indoor sports hall and campus upgrading. The school became single-session in 2016, and a new teaching block and heritage gallery opened in 2017.

The school’s history also records the development of iDARE@ATS, a project-work programme recognised as an Applied Learning Programme in 2020. It encourages students to connect classroom learning with practical problems and work together on solutions.
