About Anson Centre

Anson Centre stands at 51 Anson Road in Tanjong Pagar, District 2. NLB Infopedia records it as a 14-storey commercial and residential building put up in 1971, which makes it one of the earlier modern towers on Anson Road, ahead of neighbours such as International Plaza (1976). In its later years it operated as an office building with a ground-floor showroom, on a 99-year leasehold site.

Current status

Hong Leong Holdings is redeveloping 51 Anson Road into a 25-storey mixed-use building. Published plans show office floors on the lower levels, 82 apartments above (marketed as 51 Anson) and two sky-terrace levels, with Lum Chang as main contractor. Interesting facts

  • Anson Road runs across land levelled from Mount Wallich in 1879, according to NLB Infopedia, and is generally said to be named after Major-General Sir Archibald Anson.

  • Grounds off Anson Road hosted the 1922 Malaya-Borneo Exhibition. The area later held the Happy Valley amusement park and then Anson Road Stadium.
