About Capitol Piazza

Capitol Piazza is the retail component of the development now marketed as Capitol Singapore, at 13 Stamford Road in District 6, the City Hall and Civic District. The integrated project combines three conserved buildings, Capitol Theatre, Capitol Building and Stamford House, with a new retail mall and the Eden Residences Capitol apartments. The mall opened in stages from March 2015 and has two storeys above ground and four basement levels. The redevelopment was designed by Richard Meier & Partners Architects for Capitol Investment Holdings. EdgeProp lists the site as leasehold, with a land area of about 14,328 sqm.

Today the development is owned and run by Perennial Holdings. According to Wikipedia, the mall was renovated and the whole complex took the Capitol Singapore name in 2020. The owner's website now presents the shops and restaurants alongside the Arcade at The Capitol Kempinski, the Capitol Theatre and The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore, which opened in October 2018 inside Capitol Building and Stamford House.

Interesting facts

  • Capitol Theatre opened on 22 May 1930 with about 1,600 seats. It was designed by Keys & Dowdeswell and screened its last film in December 1998 before reopening in May 2015.

  • Capitol Building was completed in 1930 as Namazie Mansions and was later known as Shaws Building. It was relaunched under its present name in 1992.

  • Stamford House dates from 1904 and was designed by R. A. J. Bidwell of Swan & Maclaren. It was first called Oranje Building, and Raffles Hotel used its upper floors as an annexe from 1911 to 1913.

  • The Urban Redevelopment Authority acquired both Capitol Building and Stamford House in 1984. Redevelopment of the whole site was announced in 2008.

  • Perennial took full control of the development in 2018 in a deal reported at $528 million.

Nearby

City Hall MRT station (North South and East West Lines) is next door, about two to three minutes on foot. Bras Basah (Circle Line) and Bencoolen (Downtown Line) stations are roughly five to eight minutes away. Neighbours include St Andrew's Cathedral, Raffles City, CHIJMES, Funan, Peninsula Plaza and the National Gallery Singapore. The Peranakan Museum on Armenian Street and Fort Canning Park are a short walk to the west.
