About Clarke Quay Central (The Central)

Clarke Quay Central, also known as The Central, is a mixed-use development at 6, 8 and 12 Eu Tong Sen Street in postal District 1. It was developed by Far East Organization on the south bank of the Singapore River, directly above Clarke Quay MRT station. The mall opened in 2007. The development is reported to sit on a 99-year lease that began in 2001.

According to Far East Malls, the project has a five-storey shopping mall, a 25-storey office tower, two blocks of small office, home office (SOHO) units, and a sky garden. The mall has long been known for Japanese restaurants and shops, alongside Chinese and Western dining, beauty services and riverside cafes. The office and SOHO units are strata-titled, so they are owned by many different parties.

Interesting facts

  • The site was once home to Ellenborough Market, first built in 1845 and rebuilt in the 1890s. Locals called it Pasar Bahru or Sin Pa Sat, both meaning 'new market'.

  • A fire started by firecrackers during Chinese New Year destroyed the old market on 30 January 1968. Its replacement was cleared by 1997 to make way for the North East Line.

  • Far East Organization describes it as Singapore's first project to combine retail, office, SOHO and residential uses in one development.

  • The development won a FIABCI Prix d'Excellence award (office category) and a BCA Construction Excellence Award, both in 2010.

Clarke Quay MRT (North East Line) is in the basement. Fort Canning MRT (Downtown Line) is about a 7-minute walk and Chinatown MRT about 8 minutes. Read Bridge leads across the river to the Clarke Quay dining and nightlife area, and Boat Quay is a short stroll downstream. Hong Lim Park and Hong Lim Market and Food Centre are about 5 minutes away, with Chinatown Complex a little further. Fort Canning Park is around 10 minutes on foot. Swissotel Merchant Court is next door.
