About Far East Shopping Centre
Far East Shopping Centre is a strata-titled retail and office complex at 545 Orchard Road, on the corner of Angullia Park in District 9. It was completed in 1974 by Far East Organization at a reported cost of $20 million and was the largest complex on Orchard Road when it opened. Its success led the developer to build further Orchard Road properties, including Lucky Plaza and Far East Plaza.
The National Heritage Board's Roots record describes it as the first shopping centre in Singapore to have an atrium and external escalators. An overhead pedestrian bridge once linked the building to the opposite side of Orchard Road, until it was removed in the early 1980s. The building is arranged as two basement car park levels, a five-storey retail podium and ten office floors above.
The owners have made several collective sale attempts. A 2023 tender marketed by CBRE carried a guide price of $928 million and described the land as 999-year leasehold from 1871, with a site area of about 36,014 sq ft. Reported deals since then did not complete, and the building continues to operate as a strata-titled complex with many individual owners.
Location and amenities
The building sits at the western end of the Orchard Road shopping belt, next to Liat Towers and Wheelock Place and across from ION Orchard. Orchard MRT station, an interchange for the North-South and Thomson-East Coast lines, is about 200 metres away. The junction with Angullia Park gives the site two road frontages, and basement parking is available on site.
