About Furama Hotel & City Centre

Furama Hotel & City Centre is a hotel and retail building at 60 Eu Tong Sen Street, Singapore 059804, in Chinatown, District 1. It stands near the junction of Eu Tong Sen Street and Havelock Road. According to the National Heritage Board's Roots website, the hotel officially opened on 29 October 1984 as a 24-storey tower over a podium shopping centre. It was developed by Veneer Hotels and built by the Japanese contractor Kajima. EdgeProp lists the property as 99-year leasehold from 1979.

The hotel trades today as Furama City Centre, a four-star property with 445 rooms, a swimming pool, a fitness centre, a halal-kitchen buffet restaurant and a pillarless ballroom for up to 750 people. The podium, known as Furama City Centre shopping arcade, holds shops, services and small offices. The building is standing and operating, and no sale or redevelopment plan was found.

Interesting facts

  • When it opened, the hotel was managed by All Nippon Airways Hotels, and the project was backed by the Development Bank of Singapore and the Bank of China.

  • Roots records that it opened with 392 rooms, computerised management systems and 'talking lifts' with information panels, which were a novelty in 1984.

  • Furama Hotels International took over management in 2004, and the hotel was renamed Furama City Centre in October that year.
