About Queensway Shopping Centre
Queensway Shopping Centre is a freehold strata-titled mall at 1 Queensway, at the junction of Queensway, Alexandra Road and Jalan Bukit Merah in District 3. It opened in the mid-1970s: the National Heritage Board's Roots record gives 1974, while most press reports say 1976. The four-level retail podium shares its site with Queensway Tower, a 13-storey block of 78 apartments.
It is widely known as Singapore's "sports mall". Shops selling running shoes, football boots, racquets and jerseys fill its ring-shaped corridors, next to tailors, T-shirt printers, engravers, opticians and thrift stores. Around 150 shops trade here, within 241 retail strata units.
Interesting facts
Roots lists it among Singapore's earliest multi-purpose shopping complexes, together with Golden Mile and Katong. It originally had an emporium, an exhibition hall, a coffee house and a nightclub, and it is a stop on the My Queenstown Heritage Trail.
The octagonal building, sunken central concourse and circular corridors of double-fronted shops are well known for disorienting first-time visitors.
Woh Hup, the main contractor, credits the design to Group 2 Architects.
Janggut Laksa, which describes itself as the original Katong laksa, has a stall in the mall.
A collective sale attempt in 2019, with an indicative value above $500 million, was called off that October after only about 14% of owners by share value signed; 80% was required. The mall has carried on trading as normal.

IKEA Alexandra and Anchorpoint are just across the road, and Alexandra Central Mall and Park Hotel Alexandra are about three minutes' walk. Alexandra Hospital lies behind the site. For hawker food, Alexandra Village Food Centre and ABC Brickworks Market & Food Centre are each roughly eight to ten minutes on foot. The Rail Corridor and the Alexandra Canal park connector are close by for walks and cycling. The nearest MRT station is Queenstown (East-West Line), a little over a kilometre away, so most visitors arrive by bus along Queensway or Alexandra Road.
