About Raffles City Shopping Centre

Raffles City Shopping Centre is the retail part of Raffles City Singapore at 252 North Bridge Road, in District 6 (City Hall, Clarke Quay). The complex fills a whole city block bounded by North Bridge Road, Stamford Road, Beach Road and Bras Basah Road. It was developed by Tincel Properties, designed by I. M. Pei and built by SsangYong. Ground was broken on 14 August 1980 and the complex officially opened on 3 October 1986.

The mall covers five levels, from basement 2 to level 3, with more than 200 shops and about 420,000 sq ft of retail space. Above and around it are the 42-storey Raffles City Tower office block, the 73-storey Swissotel The Stamford, the twin-tower Fairmont Singapore and the Raffles City Convention Centre. CapitaLand's two listed trusts bought the complex in March 2006 for about $2.09 billion, and it is now held by CapitaLand Integrated Commercial Trust and managed by CapitaLand.

Interesting facts

  • The site was the home of Raffles Institution, Singapore's oldest school, before the school moved out and the old buildings made way for the project.

  • The scheme was first announced in 1969 under the name Raffles International Centre, so it took 17 years to reach opening day.

  • At 226 metres, the hotel tower was the tallest hotel in the world from 1986 until 1997. It opened as The Westin Stamford and took its current name in 2002.

  • The 117th International Olympic Committee Session was held at the convention centre in July 2005, when London was chosen to host the 2012 Games.

  • A basement extension in 2006 added dozens of shops, and levels 1 to 3 were reconfigured in 2021 and 2022.

Nearby

City Hall MRT (North-South and East-West lines) is directly below the mall, and Esplanade MRT (Circle Line) connects through the basement in about three minutes. Bras Basah MRT (Circle Line) is around five minutes away on foot. Raffles Hotel, CHIJMES, St Andrew's Cathedral, the Padang, the War Memorial Park and National Gallery Singapore are all within a few minutes. Underground links continue to CityLink Mall, Marina Square, Suntec City and the Esplanade theatres.
