About the street: according to the National Library Board, the name Selegie may come from a Malay word for a fire-hardened wooden spear, or from the nibong palm. The hill now called Mount Sophia was known as Bukit Selegi in the early 19th century.
Hokkien speakers called the road Tek Kia Kha, meaning the foot of the small bamboos, a reminder of the bamboo that once grew here.
Selegie House, the public housing complex further along the road, opened in 1963 and its tallest block has 20 storeys, which made it one of the tallest housing blocks in Singapore at the time.
The Ellison Building at the Bukit Timah Road end dates from 1924 and carries a Star of David on its facade. It was gazetted for conservation in 2008.

Dhoby Ghaut interchange (North South, North East and Circle lines) is about 10 minutes away. Tekka Centre, across Bukit Timah Road, has one of the best-known hawker centres in the area. Mount Sophia and Mount Emily Park rise behind Selegie Road, and the Selegie Arts Centre is a short walk to the south.
