1.Tanjong Rhu is previously know as Sandy Point. It got its malay name from cape of casuarina trees also known as pokok rhu. In cantonese it is called tsa shui which means sand pit. 2.In the 18th century, this place was used for ship building and repair. Captain Flint, a Harbor Master set up a ship building and repair company here in 1822.in 1923 established British boatbuilder J I Thornycroft set up shipyards at Tankong Rhu however in the yard went into financial recession in the 1980s. 3.In the 60s, Tanjong Rhu was a very popular seaside entertainment centre. 4.A short distance away from Tanjong Rhu called Kampong Arang was dominated by wooden jetties which are used by charcoal traders to offload charcoal from tongkangs (wooden lighters) coming in from Indonesia and Thailand.
