  • Middle Road appears on an 1836 map of Singapore. In the early town plan it marked the line between the civic district and the settlements to the north. This fact is about the street, not the building.

  • The street was the heart of the pre-war Japanese community, which knew it as Central Street. Most of that community left after the Second World War.

  • The area around Middle Road, Purvis Street and Seah Street was the main Hainanese quarter, and is linked with the early history of Hainanese chicken rice in Singapore.
