About Thye Hong Centre

Thye Hong Centre is a six-storey light-industrial and office building at 2 Leng Kee Road, Singapore 159086, at the junction with Alexandra Road in District 3 (Queenstown, Tiong Bahru). It stands on the site of the former Thye Hong Biscuit and Confectionery Factory. After the factory shut in January 1982, the land was redeveloped into the present building by Thye Hong Properties and Thye Hong Development, according to BiblioAsia. EdgeProp reported the site area as 64,069 sq ft and the tenure as freehold.

The building is strata-managed under MCST 1317 and houses a mix of small businesses, showrooms and offices. In September 2020 it was sold for $112.5 million to a company linked to SLB Development, which said at the time that it intended to redevelop the land. As of 2026 the building is still standing and remains listed in SLB Development's portfolio.

Interesting facts

  • The original Thye Hong factory opened here in March 1935 and is described by Roots as a 40,000 sq ft plant. News reports call it the first automated biscuit factory in Singapore.

  • The factory was a local landmark, topped by a bronze lion and a flame-lit torch. Its two automated lines were each about 300 feet long and ran through the night to meet export orders.

  • By the 1960s the plant employed more than 200 people and could turn out around 1,500 tonnes of biscuits a month, including Marie, Cream Crackers, Horlicks biscuits and the pineapple-jam Jam De Luxe.

  • Thye Hong exported as far as Fiji, Saudi Arabia and Mauritius. The business was bought by British biscuit maker Huntley and Palmer in 1981.

  • The former factory site is a stop on the My Queenstown Heritage Trail.
