About UOB Plaza

UOB Plaza is a two-tower office complex at 80 Raffles Place in Singapore's Downtown Core, postal District 1. It is the headquarters of United Overseas Bank (UOB), which developed it. UOB Plaza One rises about 280 metres and is usually listed at 66 storeys. UOB Plaza Two is the older, shorter tower at 38 storeys and about 162 metres. The Japanese architect Kenzo Tange designed the complex.

Plaza Two began as the original UOB Building, finished in the early 1970s as a 30-storey tower. From the late 1980s Tange refitted it, added floors and designed the new Plaza One beside it. The two octagonal towers are joined by a podium raised on columns, leaving an open public space that links Raffles Place to the Singapore River. The complex was officially opened by then Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew on 6 August 1995, UOB's 60th anniversary.

Interesting facts

  • At 280 metres, Plaza One shared the title of Singapore's tallest building with OUB Centre and Republic Plaza until Tanjong Pagar Centre was completed in 2016.

  • The site once held the Bonham Building, home of United Chinese Bank, the earlier name of UOB.

  • Masjid Moulana Mohamed Ali sits in the basement of Plaza One. It is described as Singapore's only underground mosque and moved there in the mid-1990s after its original building made way for the project.

  • Sculptures by Salvador Dali and Fernando Botero stand in and around the plaza.

Boat Quay's riverside restaurants are at the doorstep, and Market Street Hawker Centre in CapitaSpring and Lau Pa Sat are a short walk. Cavenagh Bridge, the Fullerton Hotel and the Asian Civilisations Museum lie along the river.
