Can I charge my electric car from a wall socket in the car park?
General guidance for homes in Singapore. In a condo or other strata building, common property is for the management office; in an HDB flat, your Town Council.
No. EV chargers in Singapore must be type-approved and registered, and using a portable charger with an extension cord, or any adaptor between the plug and the car, is an offence.
Check first
- Does your building already have registered EV charging points?
- Has management said anything about EV charging plans?
- Are you thinking of a portable charger? Check what the law allows first.
What you can try
- Use the building's registered chargers, or public ones, until your building has its own.
- Ask management whether the building plans to install chargers. That is a decision for the management corporation.
- If you have a private lot with power nearby, ask about installing a registered fixed charger, which must be put in by a Licensed Electrical Worker.
When to stop and get help
- Anyone suggests running an extension cord from a corridor or household socket to a car.
- A seller offers an unregistered or "universal" charger. Using an unregistered charger can cost up to $10,000 in fines.
