Is it safe to charge my e-bike or e-scooter at home?

General guidance for homes in Singapore. In a condo or other strata building, common property is for the management office; in an HDB flat, your Town Council.

Only with care: battery fires are fast and often start during charging. Never charge overnight or unattended, and never near your door or escape route.

Check first

  • Is the device UL2272-certified (e-scooter) or EN15194 with the LTA orange seal (e-bike)?
  • Is the battery original, and free of bloating, corrosion or powdery residue?
  • Where do you charge it, and is that spot on the way out of your home?

What you can try

  • Charge only when someone is awake and at home, on a hard flat surface, away from the door and anything that burns.
  • Use only the original battery and the charger or adapter the maker specifies, with the Safety Mark.
  • Let the battery cool after riding before charging it.
  • Stop using a battery that bloats, smells, gets unusually hot or was dropped hard.

When to stop and get help

  • Smoke, hissing or popping from a battery: get everyone out, close the door behind you and call 995. Do not fight a battery fire yourself.
  • Your e-scooter is not UL2272-certified. Since 1 June 2026 even keeping one is an offence, and devices can be seized.
  • The battery or charger is a non-original replacement from an unknown seller.

  • 995 (SCDF) — For any battery fire or smoke.
  • Management office — To ask where devices may be parked or charged in the building.
  • Your landlord or agent — If you rent. Tell them before booking any repair, and check your tenancy agreement for who arranges it.

When to hire someone

For battery replacement, go back to the brand's authorised dealer. Do not have battery packs repaired or modified by third parties.
