From swamp to industrial town
The name Jurong most probably comes from the Malay word for shark, jerung; to the Chinese community the area was Peng Kang, after its gambier plantations. It was mangrove swamp with a few plantations, fish and prawn ponds and crocodile-infested rivers until 1961, when 69 square kilometres were chosen for an industrial estate. Its first foundation stone, for NatSteel, was laid on 1 September 1962; JTC was set up on 1 June 1968, and by 1976 650 factories were running and more than 20,000 flats occupied.
Jurong Town Hall, JTC’s headquarters from 1974 to 2000, was inaugurated on 2 June 1975 and is a national monument. The Chinese Garden opened on 18 April 1975, closed in 2019 and reopened in 2024 as part of Jurong Lake Gardens. International Business Park, Singapore’s first business park, followed in 1992.

What the planning area covers
URA’s eleven subzones include Jurong Gateway, Lakeside (Business), Lakeside (Leisure), International Business Park, Teban Gardens, Toh Guan and Yuhua. Jurong East station, JEM, Westgate and Ng Teng Fong General Hospital are in Jurong Gateway; Chinese Garden and Jurong Lake Gardens in Lakeside (Leisure). Lakeside station and the Lakeside Drive launch are over the line in Jurong West.
New launches and land sales
- J’den — CapitaLand Development, 368 units in Jurong Gateway, launched in November 2023.
- Sora — a SingHaiyi-led consortium with KSH Holdings and Ho Lee Group, 440 units on a 99-year lease on Yuan Ching Road, launched in July 2024.
- Town Hall Link — a white site in Jurong Lake District for offices and up to 1,200 homes, on a 99-year lease; URA’s tender closes on 17 November 2026.
- Jurong East Avenue 1 — an executive condominium site of about 735 units on URA’s Confirmed List for the second half of 2026.
The 6.5-hectare Jurong Lake District master developer site drew one bid in 2024, which URA judged too low; it was not awarded.
Getting around
Jurong East is an interchange of the North–South and East–West Lines, with Chinese Garden one stop west. The Jurong Region Line will reach Jurong East in its second stage, which LTA gives as 2028, and the Cross Island Line will add a station in Jurong Lake District in its second phase, targeted for 2032.
