Brown or milky tap water: what to record and who to ask

General guidance for Singapore condo residents. Follow current official advice and confirm arrangements for your own building.

Start with appearance, not a diagnosis

PUB says temporary discolouration can follow disturbed sediment, maintenance or problems in fittings. Let discoloured water run clear before drinking, and avoid laundry or other uses while flushing. If it persists, contact PUB for advice. Do not assume that a photograph establishes whether the water is safe.

Distinguish bubbles from persistent cloudiness

PUB describes tiny air bubbles that make water look milky and disappear after a few minutes; that specific case is safe. Persistent cloudiness needs advice. Note whether the problem affects several taps, only hot water or a single appliance. A hot-water-only problem can indicate equipment trouble, but these clues do not settle the cause.

Make a clear report

Record your unit, outlets, start time, recurrence and any maintenance notice. Keep a photo taken safely, and note what happened after flushing. Tell management when multiple homes or shared equipment may be involved. Do not convert a group-chat report into an allegation about a neighbour or tank.

Contact PUB and the responsible team

PUB's twenty-four-hour call centre is 1800 2255 782; its alternative is 6521 6470. Follow any incident-specific advice. Use your building's established after-hours contact if needed. A neighbour's clear water does not explain the fault in your home.

Leave tanks and shared valves alone

PUB requires a Licensed Plumber to inspect and certify relevant storage tanks at least every twelve months, with cleaning and disinfection where necessary. This is not a blanket requirement to clean every tank annually. Ask management when the installation was checked and what update is planned; do not enter tank areas or operate communal valves.
