A higher water bill: checking for a hidden leak

Look for a pattern

A rising bill can prompt a useful check, but it does not by itself identify a leak or its location. Note changes in occupancy or use, sounds of running water when appliances are off, dripping taps, stains, peeling finishes or a damp smell. Photographs record appearance, not repair responsibility.

Use the meter only if access is safe

PUB's leak-detection guidance recommends turning off taps and water-using appliances and monitoring the meter for at least ten minutes. Movement while water use is stopped indicates leakage that needs investigation. Follow the meter's own reading guidance, and ask management or a plumber if you cannot identify or safely access your meter.

Check simple visible clues

Look beneath an accessible sink for drips and staining without disturbing fittings. PUB also describes a toilet-cistern colouring test: colouring appearing in the bowl can indicate leakage. Use only a suitable accessible cistern and follow product instructions; do not dismantle a concealed cistern or unfamiliar mechanism to perform a test.

Arrange a licensed investigation

PUB recommends a Licensed Plumber to detect and repair leaks. Tell them when the bill changed, your observations and what happened during the meter check. Ask what investigation is proposed, the call-out price and what written findings will be supplied. Leave shared valves, tanks and concealed systems to the responsible team.

Coordinate without assigning blame

Notify your landlord if renting and management if another unit or common installation might be involved. A wet patch or meter reading alone does not establish who must pay. Keep the meter readings, report date and case reference, then check whether the next bill and inspection findings show improvement.
