No water is coming out of any tap. What should I check?

General guidance for homes in Singapore. In a condo or other strata building, common property is for the management office; in an HDB flat, your Town Council.

First find out whether it is just your unit or the whole building. If it is the building, management will usually already know.

Check first

  • Try the taps in the kitchen and the bathrooms. Is it every tap, or only hot or only cold?
  • Ask a neighbour, or check the building chat or notice board for planned water works.
  • Check whether the main water valve for your unit has been turned off, for example after recent work.

What you can try

  • If only your unit is affected, find your unit's main stop valve and make sure it is fully open.
  • If water returns, run the kitchen cold tap for a short while before drinking. Brownish water should clear.
  • Turn off your water heater until water flows normally again. Follow the maker's instructions.

When to stop and get help

  • Water is leaking somewhere even though your taps are dry.
  • The water is discoloured or smells and does not clear after running the tap.
  • An elderly person, baby or someone unwell depends on water and there is no update.

Who to contact

  • Management office — First call if the whole building is affected. Condo tanks and pumps are building equipment.
  • Security guard house — If the office is closed.
  • PUB, 1800 2255 782 — If the wider area has no water, or for water quality concerns.
  • Your landlord or agent — If you rent. Tell them before booking any repair, and check your tenancy agreement for who arranges it.

When to hire someone

Only if the building's supply is fine and the problem is inside your unit, such as a faulty valve or pipe.

  • What is the total price, including call-out, parts and any after-hours charge?
  • What do you think has failed, and can you show me?
  • Are you a PUB Licensed Plumber?
