Where do I throw away old electronics, batteries and light bulbs?
General guidance for homes in Singapore. In a condo or other strata building, common property is for the management office; in an HDB flat, your Town Council.
Not in the rubbish chute. Singapore has a national e-waste scheme: bins at malls and community centres take small items, and large appliances are collected from your doorstep free of charge.
Check first
- Is it small (phone, laptop, batteries, bulbs) or large (fridge, washing machine, TV, aircon)?
- Are you buying a replacement? The retailer must take the old one back free when delivering the new one.
- Is there an e-waste bin in your condo or the nearest mall?
What you can try
- Small items: drop them in any ALBA e-waste bin; the map is at alba-ewaste.sg.
- Large appliances: book ALBA's free doorstep collection, or hand the old unit to the retailer delivering your new one, one-for-one.
- Wipe personal data from phones and computers first.
- Tape the terminals of loose lithium batteries and never bin them with general waste; they start chute and truck fires.
When to stop and get help
- A battery or power bank is swollen or hot: do not charge it, put it somewhere non-flammable, and take it to an e-waste point promptly.
