The long hill

Bukit Panjang is Malay for “long hill”, after the low hills that run south towards Bukit Timah. In the early 1900s there were settlements along Bukit Timah Road, granite quarries, the Lam Soon canning and rubber factory and the Nanyang Shoe Factory; the Cold Storage dairy farm opened around 1930 and closed in the 1970s.

Plans for a new town for 30,000 families were announced in 1983, and by 1986 the first residents were moving in. It was first called Zhenghua, under the policy of Mandarin names, and HDB renamed it Bukit Panjang in 1987; the old name lives on in Zhenghua Park and the Zhenghua schools. The Bukit Panjang LRT, Singapore’s first, was officially launched on 6 November 1999. Bukit Timah Nature Reserve takes up almost half the planning area.

What the planning area covers

URA’s seven subzones are Bangkit, Dairy Farm, Fajar, Jelebu, Nature Reserve, Saujana and Senja. Bukit Panjang Plaza, Hillion Mall and Dairy Farm Nature Park are inside; Hume station, Hillhaven and The Arden are over the line in Bukit Batok.

New launches and land sales

  • The Botany at Dairy Farm — Sim Lian Group, 386 units on a 99-year lease, launched in March 2023.
  • The Myst — City Developments Limited, 408 units on Upper Bukit Timah Road, on sale from July 2023.
  • Narra Residences — a consortium led by Apex Asia Development and Santarli Realty, 540 units on Dairy Farm Walk, launched in January 2026. URA awarded the site on 21 January 2025 to SNC2 Realty Pte. Ltd., Apex Asia Alpha Investment Two Pte. Ltd., Soon Li Heng Civil Engineering Pte Ltd and Kay Lim Realty Pte. Ltd., on a 99-year lease.
  • Senja Close — an executive condominium site awarded by HDB on 26 August 2025 to CDL Constellation Pte. Ltd.; not yet launched.
  • Dairy Farm Walk (second site) — awarded by URA on 28 January 2026 to ABR Holdings Limited, LWH Holdings Pte. Ltd., Macly Capital Pte Ltd and RP Ventures Pte Ltd, 99-year lease.

Getting around

Cashew and Hillview are on the Downtown Line, and Bukit Panjang, where the Downtown Line meets the LRT, sits on the boundary with Bukit Batok. The LRT loop serves Petir, Pending, Bangkit, Fajar, Segar, Jelapang and Senja.
